Celebrate the longest night of the year at Scienceworks this Winter Solstice. Learn about the movement of the sun in the Planetarium while sipping a mulled wine with a picnic underneath our four-metre Moon installation. Throughout the night, explore our newest exhibition Tinkertown, enjoy DJs and live entertainment, take pics in the photo booth, and get crafty with a special solstice-themed activity.

Entry to Tinkertown and one Planetarium show is included, select your show time when you purchase your ticket. General entry tickets, excluding a Planetarium show, are also available. Food and drinks available for purchase. This is an 18+ event.

What’s in the Sky Tonight: Solstice Edition

6:30PM, 7:30PM, 8:30PM, 9:30PM | PLANETARIUM SHOW

Discover the astronomical meaning of the winter solstice in this specially curated live 40-minute planetarium show. Journey through the galaxy, gaze up at Melbourne’s night sky and learn how the sun’s path changes throughout the seasons. Then fly off planet Earth and out among the stars to see spectacular views of astronomical destinations and marvel at the beauty of the vast universe.

Tinkertown

Welcome to Tinkertown, a world of marvellous invention, daring builds and mindful tinkering. Make cubby houses, solve challenges, send secret messages and invent whacky contraptions... let's build this town together!

Lantern Making

Brighten up the dark evenings with a classic winter solstice activity - lantern making! Throughout history, cultures all around the world have used lanterns and other sources of light to make it through the longest night of the year. They symbolised hope for the brighter days to come. Craft your very own lantern to light your way through this winter solstice!

Museum of the Moon

6PM TO 10PM | PLANETARIUM FOYER | EXHIBITION

This stunning art/science installation showcases our breathtaking Moon – four metres in diameter and featuring realistic details of the lunar surface. Gaze up at its wonders in the Planetarium Foyer.
