Suitable for Year Levels 1-4
The students will create their own Melbourne festival, like White Night (now part of RISING: Melbourne) or the West Projection Festival.
What to do
- Explain what happens during Melbourne Projection Festivals using images on the Internet.
- Divide the students into pairs or groups of three
- Ask each group of students to draw an outline of a building using white paper and then sticking this picture onto a box with tape. Ensure the box can stand upright.
- Provide students with torches, cellophane and other materials listed below.
- Ask the students to experiment with objects around the home and school that can make colours, patterns and shadows on their building. (Teachers can purchase various materials for this project at a local Recycle Centre.)
- Ask the students to design a projection system that projects colour and patterns onto their white building using the materials provided, masking tape and elastic bands to hold the projection system together.
- Organise a festival so that other classmates, family and friends can come and see their colourful and interesting light projection designs.
- Note, a darkened room will be required for projection experimentation and for the festival.

- Cardboard and scissors to cut out shapes to make patterns/shadows
- Elastic bands or masking tape to hold the projection system together
- CDs and mirrors to add colour

- Coloured, plastic, transparent cups
- Coloured transparent plastic or acrylic scraps
- Bubble wrap
- Sticky tape or glue to stick the white paper on the boxes
