Workshop

Robots and Coding: Navigation and Autonomous Vehicles

Years 7 to 8
Museums Victoria / Scienceworks / Education / School excursions / Robots and Coding: Navigation and Autonomous Vehicles

Students work in teams to plan, code, and debug robots to pass a range of challenges.

In this hands-on workshop students program a robot using block-based coding. Students tackle a variety of coding challenges, utilising branching, iteration and variables and explore real world applications of these skills.

This workshop is appropriate for new to experienced coders, with a variety of challenge levels available within a class.

Students will experience

  • Using iPads to code robots with a general-purpose block-based programming language.
  • A range of open-ended coding challenges, requiring creative algorithmic thinking.
  • Discussing, testing, and assessing different programming approaches to a challenge.
  • Debugging robots, by collaboratively analysing and modifying their code.

Students will learn

  • How robots receive input data from a variety of hardware and software sensors, process it according to their programming, and respond with a variety of outputs.
  • How to apply computational thinking to realistic programming applications.
  • How to write code with sequential commands, including the use of branching, iteration and variables.
  • About some of the ethical and functional impacts and considerations around the real-world use of robots.

Other key information

  • This program uses mBots and iPads.
