Join us for a peek at some of Museums Victoria’s extraordinary, rare marine science books at this unique cultural event presented by Melbourne Museum as part of Melbourne Rare Book Week.

Presented by Museums Victoria’s expert librarians and curators, this rare book viewing will delve into Museums Victoria’s fascinating collection of rare marine books and scientific artwork.  

This event is being held in conjunction with the The Paper Argonaut: Adventures in Art, Science and Rare Books talk and is proudly presented as part of Melbourne Rare Book Week.

SPEAKERS

Rebecca Carland

Bec is a dynamic history curator with over 20 years’ experience in collections, exhibitions, programs and publication within the museum sector. She collaborates across history, science and creative networks to keep historical practice energised and relevant. She strives to engage with and address the colonial legacy within museum practice and methodology. She is an advocate for the promotion of women in the sector through mentoring in the workplace and is energised by executive positions on various committees and boards.

Hayley is the library manager at Museums Victoria, where she oversees a rare book collection that specialises in natural history. With 15 years of experience in the GLAM sector, she has extensive experience in collection management and curation of rare book collections. She supports networking, advocacy and professional development through her roles with the Australian Library and Information Association as Convenor of ALIA Rare Books & Special Collections and Chair of the Government and Special Libraries sector committee.  

Nina Whittaker

Nina Whittaker (they/them) is Senior Librarian at Museums Victoria. They specialise in the cataloguing of rare materials, with over a decade of experience working with special collections including at State Library Victoria and Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum. With a particular interest in anti-racist and reparative description practices, they are a co-convenor of the ALIA Reparative Description Community of Practice. They also hold a rare materials cataloguing teaching series for the ALIA Rare Books and Special Collections Special Interest Group.

Shae Graham

Shae has a library and information management background, having worked in university, public and specialist libraries. At Museums Victoria, Shae is responsible for e-resource management, collection development and projects that support collection management and bibliographical data enhancement. She has a keen interest in Museums Victoria's historical (rare book) collections and loves sharing books from the collection with the public.
