Auslan tours of ROME: Empire, Power, People are led by Deaf Auslan users and are designed for visitors who are deaf or hard of hearing. This tour is Auslan only, no English interpretation will be provided.
This Auslan tour will begin with a short presentation by Philip Waters on the history of Rome, before taking you through ROME: Empire, Power, People and providing an overview of the exhibition. The tour will offer members of the Deaf community a memorable exploration of Rome’s political, cultural and social life. After the tour, guests can explore the exhibition at their own pace.
Please meet your guides at the lounge on the right-hand side of the main entry on the Ground Floor near the escalators heading down to ROME.

Philip has a degree in Greek and Roman history from La Trobe University and is a leader in the Deaf and hard of hearing community in Victoria. Ever since he could read, he has been fascinated by the lives of the Ancient Greeks and Romans. Auslan is his native language and has been Deaf since birth. He travels to Europe when he can to specifically tour Ancient Greek and Roman ruins across Turkey, Greece, Italy and Spain. One of his passions is to tell stories in Auslan about Roman history.
Selwyn Hoffmann is a member of the Australian Deaf community and is fluent in Auslan. Since 2018, he has been working as an Education Facilitator and Auslan Tour Guide at Museums Victoria.
