Help children develop a respect for ocean life as they learn about shells, sharks and ancient marine animals.

This resource has been designed for use after Museums Victoria has visited your kindergarten or early learning centre for a Museum in a Van incursion. It has a range of activities and additional information to extend learning in the classroom.

Through games, stories and by touching real objects from the Museums Victoria collections, children will develop a respect for ocean life as they learn about the wonders of the ocean.

In this activity students will

  • Learn about the ocean animals they explored during their incursion.
  • Discover key features of ocean animals such as the shape of shells or teeth.
  • Identify ocean animals living around Victoria, in Port Phillip Bay.
  • Learn about the different zones of the ocean.
  • Investigate amazing discoveries from the deep sea.
  • Choose between a range of fun and engaging ocean activities.

Suggested questions to engage students

  • Which ocean animals live near Melbourne/Victoria?
  • Do all ocean animals live in the same zone of the ocean?
  • Why do some ocean animals live in shells?
  • Why are some shells spiky?
