Be mesmerised by the vibrant choreography, colourful costumes, and powerful drumbeats that have made dragon and lion dances a key part of cultural celebrations across Melbourne for decades. Experience the flowing elegance of Madison Lu’s long ribbon fan and sword dances, paired with the shimmering sounds of the guzheng performed live by QiQi. Discover the guzheng, a traditional Chinese string instrument whose music has enchanted audiences for centuries, as this captivating showcase brings movement and sound together in a vivid celebration of story and tradition.
This year, as we race into the Year of the Horse, we celebrate the 100th birthday of Australia’s most legendary racehorse, Phar Lap. More than 80 years after he first went on display, Phar Lap remains Melbourne Museums most popular exhibit. Hear the story of Australia’s wonder horse as we honour his legacy, reflect on his extraordinary journey and explore why he remains such an icon a century on.
The Chinese Youth Society of Melbourne (CYSM) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to celebrating and promoting Chinese culture. Established in 1968, the CYSM Dance Team shares the vibrant art of lion and dragon dancing with the local community and beyond. Over the years, they have participated in numerous performances and festivals, fostering connections with dance troupes and community groups worldwide. Through their efforts, they continue to enrich the cultural landscape of Melbourne and promote global friendship.
QiQi and Madison are Melbourne-based performers who bring Lunar New Year to life through music and dance. QiQi is a multi-instrumentalist specialising in guzheng (Chinese zither), creating rich, atmospheric performances that blend traditional sounds with contemporary expression. Madison is a captivating dancer whose long ribbon, short ribbon and sword dances bring beauty, grace and energy to the stage.
Together, they create vibrant performances that celebrate culture, storytelling and joyful connection for audiences of all ages. They are joined by a special appearance from Cai Shen (Choy Sun), the God of Wealth, who brings wishes of prosperity and good fortune for the year ahead.
