Melbourne Story Gallery Visit

Discover the people, places and stories that have made Melbourne the city it is today.

Students will explore key influences and events that have shaped Melbourne since 1835 in the Melbourne Story exhibition.

Students will experience

  • A snapshot of the history of Melbourne from 1835.
  • Over 1200 irreplaceable objects from Victoria's state collection.
  • Ride in a restored Luna Park Big Dipper carriage.
  • Step back in time to 1890s Little Lonsdale Street through visiting replica workers’ cottages.
  • The music and sounds of Melbourne’s past.
  • Different perspectives of the city.
  • Interactive displays to see how Melbourne and suburbs have changed over time.

Students will learn

  • How Melbourne has evolved and developed over time.
  • How objects and artefacts can build a historical narrative.
  • About significant events, ideas, people, groups and movements that contributed to continuity and change in Melbourne.
  • That people have varying perspectives and experiences of Melbourne.
