Meet Our Baby Triceratops

Meet Baby Triceratops onsite at Melbourne Museum these school holidays.


We know that dinosaurs had babies, and they probably all hatched from eggs. But what did they look, smell and sound like? Visit Melbourne Museum these school holidays for a special meet and greet with our newest arrival – Baby Trio.

Triceratops in Technicolour

What colour was the Triceratops?

Children and their families work together to create a unique augmented reality Triceratops in this intergenerational workshop using the program Procreate. Starting with a behind-the-scenes of the discovery of the Triceratops, participants learn how to design and colour a digital ‘skin’ for their augmented reality Triceratops. By the end of the workshop, participants receive a digital file which enables them to view their augmented reality Triceratops at home.

Triceratops Masks

With its three horns, large frill and parrot-like beak, Triceratops is one of the most iconic and recognisable land animals to have ever lived.

Create a 3D face mask of Horridus – one of the world’s most complete Triceratops fossils and decorate it with the Colours of the Cretaceous palette created by the exhibition’s official Colour Partner, Coloursmith by Taubmans®. Fossil hunters and fashionistas of all ages welcome!

Bite Sized Science | Fascinating Fossils
1 October | Included with museum entry | Session times vary
Explore how to understand fossils and some of the mysteries and mistakes that have been made when interpreting what they mean in this edition of Bite Sized Science.

Dr Rolf Schmidt, Collection Manager of Invertebrate Palaeontology at Museums Victoria Research Institute, looks after fossils including ammonites, trilobites, sea lillies, lace corals and more. His research in marine Bryozoa, a group of colonial animals, uncovers how they have evolved and what they tell us about past environments.

Road to Zero’s Digital Road Safety Hunt
19 September – 1 October | Free | Daily excluding Sunday 10am – 3pm
Road to Zero is offering free school holiday fun for the whole family with the Digital Road Safety Hunt.

Every day, Victorians take more than 14 million trips to get where they need to go – in vehicles, on foot, on two wheels and public transport. No matter how you choose to get around, each trip should be a safe one. The Digital Road Safety Hunt will help you discover how you and your communities can create a safe environment through this problem-solving adventure.

Kooyang | Eel Mobiles
23 September | Included with museum entry | 11am – 3pm
Create your own Kooyang | Eel (Gunditjmara) mobile to celebrate the opening of Naadohbii: To Draw Water.

Kooyangs migrate from our freshwater rivers, creeks and lakes to the saltwater Country. They spawn in the coral sea near Vanuatu where they start their journey as young “glass eels".

Naadohbii: To Draw Water is a tri-nation co-curated exhibition developed between Museums Victoria, Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG-Qaumajuq) and Pātaka Art + Museum. Featuring over 20 artists the exhibition illustrates an axis of solidarity between First Peoples nations across the globe around environmental, political and cultural connections and relationships to water.

Tyama: a multisensory experience of nature
Temporary exhibition | Surcharged | Daily, 9am – 5pm
Tyama transports you to Victoria’s nocturnal worlds, immersing you in 360-degree responsive projections, breathtaking effects, and exquisite soundscapes. This is an interactive museum experience like no other, giving you the chance to discover senses beyond human perception alongside the animals that use them.

Grounded in First Peoples knowledge, Tyama blends the physical and digital to create an unmissable immersive experience to reawaken your connection to the natural world.

Bricktionary: The Interactive LEGO® brick Exhibition
Opens 3 September | Temporary exhibition | Surcharged | Daily, 9am – 5pm
Just like Brickman’s latest book, The Bricktionary: the ultimate LEGO® A-Z, our latest exhibition is built to inspire LEGO® builders’ imaginations and challenge visitors with four new interactive build zones!

Filled with over 150 models from the book, the exhibition also includes models from TV’s LEGO Masters Australia, never-seen-before creations and over 45 new models from the imaginations of the Brickman team! Bricktionary: The Interactive Exhibition is a 60–90min LEGO® brick experience and is designed as a fun-filled journey for families, kids and adults.

Scienceworks

Illuminate: How Science Comes to Light
Temporary exhibition | Surcharged | Daily, 10am – 4.30pm
Illuminate is a brand-new exhibition exploring the science behind the fastest traveller in the universe – light. Ignite the senses and learn through hands-on interactive play. What is light, what can we do with it and how do we see? In this vibrant festival-themed exhibition explore visual perception and illumination through colour, sound and action. Learn how light behaves, such as how it reflects and refracts and what tools we’ve invented to harness it.

A Tasty Experiment
17 September – 2 October | Included with museum entry | Daily, 10am – 4pm
Step into the STEM Lab at Scienceworks these school holidays to learn about how our brain and tongue play a part in our food choice, while contributing to scientific research about food preference and children’s eating behaviours.

Children can explore a buffet of treats in virtual reality, test their preference for sweet and salty foods and learn about how packaging design influences our food choices. There are also daily pop-up talks about food science and eating behaviours presented by Deakin University staff and students.

This program is presented in partnership with the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition at Deakin University.

The Colour Combo Show
17 September – 2 October | Included with museum entry | Daily, 12pm & 2pm
Take a seat in our under-cover amphitheatre for a look at COLOUR! See plenty of colourful demonstrations in this free 20-minute live show. We’ll shine a light on what happens when colours are mixed or separated and how our eyes perceive colour. If yellow plus blue equals green, then why does red, green and blue equal white? Is mixing light the same as mixing paint? What colour is a banana in the dark? Find out at The Colour Combo Show!

Lights, Energy, Action!
17 September – 2 October | Surcharged | Daily, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm
Explore all things ENERGY in three rounds of electrifying demonstrations at Scienceworks high-voltage lighting room. The show investigates different kinds of energy, including light, sound, electricity, and how they intertwine. With spectacular demonstrations, high voltage equipment, and charismatic presenters, there’s no better place to spark your curiosity!

Pumping Station Tours
17 September – 2 October | Included with museum entry | 11am & 1pm
Hear some of the smelly stories from the straining well and explore the magnificent engine room as you marvel at the engineering feat that helped overcome the stench of 19th century Melbourne.

Collection Store Tours

Go on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Scienceworks Collection Store. Get a chance to see some of the 40,00 collection items stored at Scienceworks and listen to the stories of these rare and unique items. Tours run subject to guide availability.

Immigration Museum

What Makes Me Shine
17 September – 2 October | Free | Daily, 10am – 5pm
Join us as we explore the many festivals of light. Visit the Immigration Museum’s Discovery Centre to create your own symbol of light to take home or hang in the Museum’s installation.

Learn about the different festivals of light around the world through their symbols; divas, moons, candles, and more. One special festival symbolised by the candle is Hannukah, celebrated for eight days and eight nights, where light dispels darkness. Create your own paper decoration as a celebration of stories, identities and cultural festivals. 

This program is proudly presented in partnership with the Ark Centre and Pillars of Light Festival.

Becoming You: An incomplete guide
Temporary Exhibition | Ticket included with museum entry | Daily 10am – 5pm
Growing up is confusing, difficult to navigate, and different for everyone. Becoming You presents 71 Australian coming of age stories by 72 diverse storytellers. These personal experiences traverse landscapes of time, gender, orientation, culture, age and distance, reflecting Immigration Museum's commitment to celebrating our shared humanity.

IMAX

BACK FROM THE BRINK 3D
Join this remarkable and heartfelt adventure to save endangered species around the world as we show that positive change is possible in IMAX’s latest documentary. Narrated by Claire Danes, families will meet scientists, park rangers and students working to save endangered animals around the world on the IMAX screen.

Discover how California’s Channel Island Fox is rescued from an invasion of Golden Eagles, join the former hunters of one of the world’s most endangered primates, the Golden Monkey, now protecting them in the fabled mountains of China’s Yunnan Province and witness the wondrous migration of the Christmas Island Red Crab.
