History Skills: Interpreting the Past

Years 7 to 8

Students use primary sources to develop critical thinking skills.

Students become historical investigators, using objects and sources to ask critical questions about migration, colonisation, and identity in Australia.

Students will experience

  • Analysing primary source material to create their own historical questions for personal inquiry.
  • Accessing digital content from museum experts on the significance of historical study.
  • Strengthening historical and critical thinking skills in a museum setting.

Students will learn

  • How objects can be used to investigate key historical moments and perspectives from the past.
  • About the significance of historical study for the present day.
  • About the place and significance of site of Immigration Museum in learning about colonisation in Victoria.
  • About the range of migrant stories that tell a complex story of Australia as a nation today.

Students will be provided

  • A booklet to take back to school which will guide them through the galleries and for them to record their findings.

Students will need

  • Pen or pencil.

Other key information

  • This excursion includes a 45 minute workshop followed by 45 minute gallery visit.
