The ground floor of the Royal Exhibition Building is immediately impressive. No matter which triumphal portico you enter, as soon as you look up you’ll be struck by its breathtaking ceilings. Highlights include the detailed frescos and timber floors, balcony balustrades and repeating columns that direct your eyes towards the jewel in the crown, the Dome’s cupula, with its delightfully deceptive, trick-of-the-eye sky mural and gold leaf finish.
Overall, the Ground Floor is comprised of four main spaces: the Eastern and Western Naves, the Northern Transept facing Melbourne Museum and the Dome.
The Northern Transept houses a kiosk which is available for use when hiring the Royal Exhibition Building. Offering choice is important to us, so you can use our recommended caterers or yours to orchestrate the perfect food and beverage menu. See catering for more information.
The Eastern and Western Naves are the building wings that flank the soaring octangular Dome. With the potential to display just about anything, you can let your imagination run wild when it comes to temporary lighting, floral displays and dinner seating.
A number of configurations of these spaces are available to hire within the Royal Exhibition Building, with the minimum area including the Northern Transept and the Dome.
