Dr James Rule
Curatorial Research Assistant
Palaeontology
For James, the excitement of working with fossils never gets old. He’s recently finished his PhD studying ancient seal fossils, work that resulted in James discovering a new species of extinct monk seal. He’s also helped discover new fossils all over Victoria.
James says he’s always been fascinated by the natural world, but his gateway to palaeontology was a childhood love of dinosaurs.
His first ever fossil find took place when he was just ten years old, on a tour of a dinosaur site at Inverloch. He proudly took one of his discoveries to school, along with a letter from the museum’s experts stating his other fossil find was a real dinosaur bone.
And today, James is one of those experts, contributing his expertise to the team bringing the Triceratops to Melbourne Museum.
