State Government announces $17m uplift for Museums Victoria

The Victorian State Government has announced a vital boost in funding for Museums Victoria today, with the increase to be utilised in the operational activities of Melbourne Museum, Immigration Museum, Scienceworks and the Royal Exhibition Building.

The increase in support will be fundamental to Museums Victoria.

Museums Victoria - Australia's largest public museum organisation - is today delighted to accept an uplift in base funding of $17m over four years from the State Government in the revised budget announcement today. From 2021-2022, Museums Victoria's base funding will increase $4.5m per year, ongoing.

The increase in support will be fundamental to the operational, maintenance and collection management efforts of Museums Victoria's campuses, including Melbourne Museum, Immigration Museum, Scienceworks and the Royal Exhibition Building. The boost will better place the organisation to take meticulous care of our State’s collection, to proudly share stories of culture, history and science, and to offer engaging and unmissable experiences that help us to make sense of the world around us.

"I am absolutely delighted to share in this news today. On behalf of Museums Victoria, I extend a huge thank you to Premier Daniel Andrews, the State Government, Minister Martin Foley and our governing body, Creative Victoria." Lynley Marshall, CEO of Museums Victoria

"At its core, this uplift in funding is recognition of the exceptional work by Museums Victoria staff, and I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every staff member, contractor and volunteer for the expertise, passion, and commitment that they have brought to their work on a daily basis. This acknowledges especially the hard work that was required to revitalise our program of exhibitions and experiences last year – a huge effort by the talented individuals that make up Museums Victoria, one that has been recognised far outside this organisation, in government and beyond," says Lynley.

Minister for Creative Industries, Martin Foley said, "This funding will enable Museums Victoria to deliver extraordinary experiences across our state’s iconic museums. It will safeguard and bring to life our cultural and scientific collections, and engage Victorians and visitors in exciting new ways."

Today's announcement demonstrates the strong support for Museums Victoria's future plans by the State Government and Creative Victoria. Museums Victoria is a cultural collective which is currently in the process of a thrilling transformation. This additional funding will see the organisation put priority on placing First People’s living cultures at the core of its practice, and stepping into virtual spaces to deliver audience centred experiences beyond its physical walls.
