One of Museums Victoria’s collection storage facilities, the Merri-bek Facility, was affected last night by flooding as a result of a burst water pipe.
A number of collection items were swept out of the building. Some were retrieved by museum staff and local residents.
The facility was quickly secured and a full assessment by Museums Victoria Collections’ Emergency Response Team is in progress.
The objects affected by the flooding have little or no financial value but are of historical and scientific significance.
If members of the public find any Museums Victoria labelled containers, we would be grateful if they could be returned to Melbourne Museum.
A thorough assessment of the cause and impact of the flood is now underway.
