Celebrate the Year of the Horse at Museums Victoria

Lunar New Year is a time of celebration, family gatherings, special food, and preparations for the year ahead, ushering in good fortune and new beginnings.

In 2026, the Year of the Horse takes on extra significance here in Victoria as we mark the 100th birthday of Phar Lap, Melbourne Museum's most beloved exhibit and Australia’s greatest racehorse.

Lunar New Year falls in late January or early February and is celebrated across many Asian countries, including China, Singapore, Korea, and Vietnam, as well as by communities worldwide—such as those here in Victoria. This year, as we welcome the spirit of the horse, we also honor Phar Lap’s enduring legacy, a symbol of strength, resilience, and hope.
