The Journey of Bong Su

How taxidermy honours a beloved Asian Elephant

Skilled in the art of taxidermy, the preparation team at Museums Victoria spend their days sculpting models, painting fur, and breathing life into museum specimens. But how did they approach the mammoth task of preparing one of Melbourne’s most loved Asian Elephants?

Bong Su lived at Zoos Victoria for 40 years, where he was beloved by both his keepers and the public. His legacy continues, both through his children and grandchildren now living at Werribee Open Range Zoo, and as a symbol of biodiversity and conservation at Melbourne Museum.
