I joined the Museum in 1974 as Curator of Minerals and retired at the end of 2013 after 40 years.

My main roles were to grow and improve the museum’s collections of minerals, rocks and meteorites for use in research projects and exhibitions, and to engage with the wider community across many topics of interest within the vast field of geology. My personal research interests are in the analysis of minerals, especially unusual species, documentation of mineral assemblages, and historical mineralogy. Working with other experts, I have described over 50 minerals new to science.

I have travelled widely to collect minerals and rocks from such far-flung locations as Russia, Greenland, Northern Pakistan and Canada, as well as places throughout Australia. Victoria, with its great geological diversity, has never ceased to surprise with its occurrences of unusual and rare minerals and has provided me with specimens for many collaborative research projects. I’ve published over 200 papers and notes on my research interests, as well as books on Victorian zeolites, phosphate minerals and gemstones, and on the minerals from Australia’s foremost mineral locality, Broken Hill in NSW. I also edited the 2003 volume Geology of Victoria for the Victorian Division of the Geological Society of Australia (GSA).

My contributions to the geological sciences have been recognised through the awarding of the GSA’s Selwyn Medal in 1999 and I was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2006.

In my Emeritus position, I am fortunate to still have access to the collections, with one of my favourite tasks being to enhance the historical information on the database. I still analyse minerals and have research projects that will yield regular publications.
