School excursions to Melbourne Museum, Immigration Museum and Scienceworks offer students a way of understanding our world and learning curriculum content through experiences that give real-world meaning, context and connection.
Learning in museums can be hands-on experiences in immersive exhibitions, seeing extraordinary historical or scientific objects, viewing a planetarium show or participating in a program that challenges your ideas.
In this program, led by an experienced Museum Educator, preservice teachers will unpack their current understanding on what a museum is, and how the museum collections and exhibitions are connected to the Victorian Curriculum. Preservice teachers will be guided on how to plan for learning on an excursion, maximising the learning and social outcomes for their students.
Each program is by negotiation with staff at the museum of your choice. The program must be booked and organised by university staff. All programs are subject to availability and a minimum of four weeks’ notice is required to request a session.
Student Teachers will be provided
- An overview of museum programs relevant to their area of the curriculum
- Insight into museum pedagogical practices, such as object, narrative and design-led learning
- Resources to assist the embedding of museum excursions and off-site experiences into units of learning
- Access to museum exhibitions and galleries
Curriculum
- Curriculum focus to be negotiated, and dependent on the needs of the group.
