Help Us Protect Earth’s Incredible Biodiversity
Biodiversity is under threat. In 2023, Australia saw an alarming spike in wildlife decline, with 144 species added to the National Threatened Species List – five times higher than the typical annual rate. This growing emergency threatens the ecosystems that provide us with clean air, food, medicine, and a stable climate.
At Museums Victoria, we are taking action to protect our biodiversity. But we can’t do it without you.
This end of financial year, your donation will power Museums Victoria’s Our Wondrous Planet Project – a multi-faceted initiative designed to inspire action, drive scientific breakthroughs, and equip future generations to protect our planet:
Our Wondrous Planet Exhibition
Launching in September 2025 and not yet announced to the public, Our Wondrous Planet will be the largest gallery redevelopment in Melbourne Museum’s history. This immersive 1,800sqm experience will showcase over 700 specimen from Museums Victoria’s collection. Informed the expertise of the Museums Victoria Research Institute, the exhibition will explore global ecosystems through both Western and First Peoples knowledge.
Pioneering Research
From responding to bushfire recovery to mapping life in the deepest oceans, Museums Victoria Research Institute’s scientists are leading efforts to understand and protect Earth’s biodiversity. We seek your support to:
- Undertake biodiversity mapping to safeguard deep marine ecosystems.
- Undertake scientific research critical to the recovery of biodiversity after bushfires and other disasters.
STEM Education for All
Our future depends on young people who are equipped to solve tomorrow’s environmental challenges. Your support will help us deliver:
- STEM on the Road: STEM education incursions for regional and underserved schools.
- Our Wondrous Planet | STEM Design Sprints: Hands-on workshops where students create real-world solutions to environmental problems, held at Melbourne Museum and regional schools.
Why Museums Victoria?
As the most-visited museum in Australia and a leader in scientific research, Museums Victoria reaches millions each year through our exhibitions, education programs, and digital engagement. With a focus on STEM education, we are the largest provider of curriculum-linked education programs in Victoria outside the public school system, reaching 300,000 students each year. We don’t just inform – we inspire action.
The research undertaken by the Museums Victoria Research Institute shapes conservation policies and delivers real-world impact. Our education programs unlock opportunities for the next generation of STEM experts. And our exhibitions bring the story of life on Earth to the public – powerfully and accessibly.
