Pop-Up Museum

Our Pop-Up Museum activation is designed for larger audiences over a longer duration and can run from between 60 minutes to an entire day.

At the Pop-Up Museum, participants explore a range of fossils, collection objects, taxidermy and activities displayed on 'touch-tables.'

This hands-on experience is enriched by our knowledgeable Museum Educators who are available to answer any questions participants might have.

Themes on offer

Become a palaeontologist for the day! Go back in time to explore a range of different interpretative fossils with Dinosaurs from Australia and around the world.

The program features:

  • Casts of a Triceratops horn, teeth and section of a frill from the from Melbourne Museum.
  • Casts of a Tarbosaurus skull and leg, a carnivore with huge teeth and smaller cousin of the T-rex!
  • Koolasuchus cleelandi, an ancient car-sized amphibian and Victoria’s State Fossil Emblem
  • Casts of Archaeopteryx, Gallimimus and dinosaur eggs!

Find out about the wonderful things that live on our beaches and swim in our oceans. Imagine yourself as a marine biologist and learn about shells, sharks and ancient marine animals that lived millions of years ago.

The program features:

  • Some of our favourite taxidermied animals from the Museums Victoria collection, including a green sea turtle and a seagull!
  • Collection objects such as a tiger shark jaw and whale vertebra
  • A wide range of shells, including a giant triton shell!
  • Real fossil specimens, such as a Megalodon tooth

Explore a range of different interpretative objects across a timeline from Australian dinosaurs, to megafauna, to today’s animals.

The program features:

  • A life-sized Muttaburrasaurus skull and leg
  • A Diprotodon skull cast, and footprints artwork
  • Koolasuchus cleelandi, an ancient car-sized amphibian and Victoria’s State Fossil Emblem
  • Artwork of Thylacoleo to scale, as well as a cast of a Thylacoleo skull
  • Australian animal taxidermy from the Museums Victoria collection (koala, platypus, echidna, a range of birds, and more!)

  • Available: School holidays
  • Duration: 45 to 60 minutes
  • Suitable for: Family audiences, children aged 3 to 13
  • Cost:
    • 1 hour: $300 for up to 75 participants
    • 3 hours: $600 for up to 300 participants
    • 5 hours: $900 for up to 500 participants
