Filming and image requests
Editorial filming and photography requests
Museums Victoria’s media and communications team facilitates photography and filming requests from media outlets for editorial purposes only. Filmmakers must guarantee an on-camera acknowledgement of Museums Victoria and/or its venues to be classified as editorial.
Commercial photography and filming
Commercial photography or filming is not permitted without prior written permission. Any photography or filming that uses Museums Victoria's locations as a backdrop—such as for films, television dramas, fashion shoots, or advertising—is not deemed editorial.

Non-commercial use includes personal, educational, artistic or scholarly projects that are not intended for sale, promotion or marketing.

Guidelines
- Please be mindful of other guests in the museum. Avoid disrupting their experience while filming.
- Please do not film individuals without their explicit consent. If your project involves capturing photos or video of members of the public, please bring along release forms.
- If your project involves capturing film footage or photography of specific artworks, ensure you have obtained permission from the relevant artists or copyright holders.
Special permissions and student projects
You may need special permission from Museums Victoria for your student film/photography project if either of the following apply:
- Your filming activity includes more than five (5) people (including all production crew and talent).
- Your equipment exceeds one handheld camera, one tripod and handheld sound recording equipment.
Please submit your request with as much notice as possible, and at least five (5) business days ahead of time. Each request is evaluated on a case-by-case basis, and support can only be offered under specific circumstances.
Properly crediting the museum or venue is essential, so ensure that the location is acknowledged in any published academic materials or presentations featuring your work.
To help us better understand your request and your needs for filming and photography, we kindly ask that the following information is detailed in your request:
- Dates, start times and finish times for filming.
- Locations where you request to film.
- The number of people who will be present during filming.
- Details on any equipment that will be used.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping us maintain a welcoming environment for all visitors.
