Scienceworks has hosted the Victorian finals of the Model Solar Vehicle Challenge since 1990, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to STEM education.
The challenge is a competition for teams of school students to design and build model cars and boats that are powered only by sunlight. Students then race their vehicle against those of other teams.
The type of vehicle built depends on the age of the schoolchildren and the skills provided by the teacher or teachers assisting them. Boats are generally built by Primary schools while cars, requiring more complex engineering, are built by Secondary schools.
In recent years the Model Solar Vehicle Challenge has provided a "kit car" category, allowing schools to get started in building solar vehicles without having to start from scratch.
While only schoolchildren participate in the event, visitors to Scienceworks are welcome to come out the arena and watch the fun in the sun.
