See some of the rarest and most fascinating species displayed at Melbourne Museum.

Hear stories from Museums Victoria scientists as they discuss unique collections, covering everything from ancient fossils to live exhibits.

Create your own Marvellous Megafauna World or Triceratops Mask to take home while learning about endangered species and the places they call home.

Marvellous Megafauna World

Main Foyer, ground level | 11am – 3pm

Make your own paper diorama of an ancient Australian landscape inspired by the Volcanic Plains of Western Victoria. Learn about some of the incredible megafauna and ancient flora of the region, while gaining an insight into First Peoples’ knowledge and the importance of Caring for Country.

Bite-Sized Science: Curiosities of the Desert and X-Ray Superpowers

Learning Lab Studio, ground level | Session 1: 12 noon | Session 2: 1pm

Are there dragons in the Australian deserts? Are they huge or tiny? With wings? What if I told you we can see inside them, and 3D print them?

These sessions are for family audiences, with children aged 6–12. Bite-Sized Science sessions include a 10–15 minute presentation followed by a question and answer (Q&A). Places are limited so please arrive early.

Sci pod, ground level | 10AM – 2PM

Discoveries from the deep – See some of the amazing marine life from our collections. How do they adapt to survive in the deep?

Rocks and Minerals | Geology & Mineralogy

600 million years, ground level | 10am – 2pm

See highlights from the museum’s amazing collections including beautiful, useful and ancient rocks and minerals. Hear about how nature formed them and the science behind their unusual appearance.

Prehistoric Planet | Palaeontology

Science and Life Gallery, ground level | 10AM – 2PM

Fossils from the age of dinosaurs, prehistoric giants of the sea, and ice age megabeasts, including a sneak peek at the latest palaeontological discoveries never-before shown in public. Presented by Museums Victoria’s palaeontologists.

Insects and their Amazing Cousins | Entomology

Science and Life Gallery, ground level | 10AM – 2PM

Beautiful and diverse - the world of insects is full of surprising adaptations that help these animals survive. Get a close look at rare and unusual specimens.

Art And Science | Preparators

Science and Life Gallery, ground level | 10AM – 2PM

From model making to taxidermy - The Museums Victoria Preparatory Team bring art and science together - creating the incredible models all over the museum and giving life to mounted animals.

Beyond the Screen

Learning Lab| 10am – 4.45pm

Embark on a journey into the future with a weekend activation of virtual experiences in Melbourne Museum’s first-of-its-kind digital immersive Learning Lab.

Triceratops Masks

MAIN FOYER, GROUND LEVEL | 11AM – 3PM

With its three horns, large frill and parrot-like beak, Triceratops is amongst the most iconic and recognizable land animals to have ever lived.

Make your own mask and visit Horridus- one of the world’s most complete Triceratops’ fossils at Melbourne Museum. Crease, tuck and fold your mask into shape then decorate it with the Colours of the Cretaceous colour palette- a special range inspired by the exhibition and created by Coloursmith by Taubmans.
