Rock Ling, Genypterus tigerinus

Plate 27, Figure 1. Australian Rockling, Genypterus australis (now known as Rock Ling, Genypterus tigerinus)

Drawing - pencil, watercolour and ink on paper - of a Rock Ling
PZ 27.2 – Drawing - pencil, watercolour and ink on paper - Rock Ling, Genypterus tigerinus Klunzinger by Arthur Bartholomew

The stomaches of those opened were full of shrimps as in the European Rockling (Motella), with which the colonial fisherman see some relation. It is not known whether our Genypterus makes the curious nest for preservation of its eggs, well known in the 5-bearded Rocklings of England.

Abundant on our coasts in the winter season; not uncommon in the market, and moderately good for the table. It rarely reaches three feet in length, and is usually much less.
