Ocean Perch, Helicolenus percoides

Plate 33. Banded Red Gurnet-Perch, Sebastes percoides (now known as Reef Ocean Perch, Helicolenus percoides) found on the Victorian Coast

Hand-coloured lithograph - lithographic ink, watercolour and varnish on paper - of an Ocean Perch
PZ 33.3 – Lithographic print - Reef Ocean Perch, Helicolenus percoides (as the Banded Red Gurnet-Perch, Sebastes percoides), Arthur Bartholomew and Theresa Poole

The fishes of this genus (Sebastes) resemble Scorpœa, but are distinguished by the scaly covering of all the plates of the head up to the front edge of the orbit, and by the absence of the fleshy or skinny filaments to the head and the sides of the body found on that genus.

The present species is popularly called "Gurnet", or "Gurnet perch", by the fisherman and dealers, as well as the more common Neosebastes scorpœnoides and N. pandus.

It has not been figured with the colors of life before.

Rather rare on the Victorian coast.
