This fish occurs in great numbers in the Gippsland lakes opening into the sea, and is brought to the markets at Melbourne in large quantities in the cold months; it also occurs at Sandridge and at the mouth of the Saltwater River. The flesh is moderately good for the table.

The previously described species of Lates inhabits the Nile and mouths of the large Indian rivers.
