Social Story for a family visit to the Royal Exhibition Building

I am going to visit the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne. I will go almost to the top of the building and walk around its dome.

I will meet the guide in the Melbourne Museum foyer. The guide will take me to the open plaza area between Melbourne Museum and the Royal Exhibition Building and give my group an introduction.

I will go with the group into the building. I will either stand under the dome or climb the stairs to the first floor, depending on whether there is an exhibition or event happening inside the building.

I will listen to the guide. The guide will tell me about the importance of the building and its history.

I will visit an exhibition in the basement of the building and see some images and objects which relate to the building’s history.

I will climb up many stairs to get to the top of the building or I can ask my teacher if I can take the lift with a museum staff member.

At the top of the stairs and the lift is the Dome Promenade. The Dome Promenade is an open-air area where I will be able to see views of the city, Carlton Gardens, surrounding suburbs, Melbourne Museum and, on a clear day, the Dandenong Ranges in the distance.

I will walk up some stairs and be able to look in every direction. If I feel scared, I can tell my teacher.

I might be given an activity to help me understand what I am seeing.

After I have seen views from the Dome Promenade, I will walk down the stairs with my group. I can also ask my teacher to take the lift to the ground floor with a museum staff person.

I will follow the guide and exit the building.
