Music (Sound Production)
VCE VET Music (Sound Production) students work with a range of contemporary industry technologies. They learn to reinforce sound in live performance and collaborate with clients to record, edit, mix and enhance sound in a recording studio context. Students also complete industry-specific units focused on the application of effective work practices, health and safety, and copyright. The works in this exhibition represent excellent examples of students’ sound production.

I created ‘Apollo 12’ after listening to the Avalanches and being inspired to learn how to record and mix loops on a DAW. To create my piece, I combined pre-recorded sounds, audio from old films and the moon landing, with tracks I recorded during class. I wanted to really weave in a space theme, both within the voiceovers and the track itself because it was such an iconic historical moment. I also thought it was fitting because I’m from Apollo Bay.

Fading
pro tools
Fading’ is an original pop song in a ballad style. I combined the string instrumentation, polysynths and vocals commonly used in pop songs and ballads with modern production techniques to create
a polished sound. Having written the lyrics and chords, I recorded the vocals myself and played the instrumentation as MIDI tracks. I used EQ, the stereo field and Melodyne specifically to achieve a polished,
‘pop’ sounding song. The goal was to reflect the meaning behind the lyrics through making the vocals feel isolated, then build gradually with thick harmonies and instrumental parts.
