Describe your career trajectory since exhibiting in Top Designs.
Since exhibiting in Top Designs, my career has led me to places I could only have dreamt of at the time. I have had the privilege to exhibit my work in fashion shows such as Melbourne Design Week and exhibitions like the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show (2018), and I've had my designs performed on stage at festivals for artists as big as Carl Cox. I was a Top 10 finalist for the Australian Fashion Foundation, which led me to work alongside my all-time favourite Australian brand Romance Was Born.
Eight years since exhibiting in Top Designs, I have now established my own handmade label called YOUR(FRËÀK)GURL, which allows me the freedom to express my personal creativity. I also work full time designing at Gorman clothing.
Tell us more about the role of sustainability in your design practice.
Because I own a small, handmade Naarm/Melbourne-based label that follows a slow-fashion cycle, my design practice considers responsible approaches by making to order, which reduces waste and leftover stock. Many of my designs are available for pre-order, allowing me to plan in advance and order the exact quantity of fabrics and trims that are required.
What is the future of fashion design?
I believe the future will allow for greater inclusivity and personalisation. There are so many small independent fashion brands that are constantly emerging via social media and are integrating better ethical and social considerations. Supporting local businesses is the way to go!
