Product design is a response to changing needs and seeks to improve the quality of life through the design of creative, innovative and sustainable products. For VCE Product Design and Technology, students assume the role of a designer-maker by identifying a real need, a problem or an opportunity that is then articulated in their design brief. This need, problem or opportunity is investigated and informed by research to aid the development of a solution, in the form of a physical, three-dimensional product.
The students address relevant product design factors in their briefs and articulate the expected quality of finish for their products. The drawings and scheduled production plans reflect a thorough consideration of a range of product design factors. The products and design folios, which comprise production work, care labels or instructions, and product evaluations, address Outcome 3 of Unit 3 and Outcomes 2 and 3 of Unit 4.
