What techniques do historians employ? What are their sources of evidence? How do we know what life was like in the past?
Think like an Archaeologist! focuses on the Little Lon section of The Melbourne Story in the late 1800s. This section of the exhibition was informed by a number of archaeological digs conducted in the area. It invites students to consider what we can learn from the ‘rubbish’ that was left behind in the cesspits of Little Lon.
Students work in community of enquiry teams sorting through archaeological materials and objects found during the digs. Together they learn how to think like an archaeologist when confronted with fragments from the past.
They continue their investigations in The Melbourne Story using the Dunny Detectives booklet provided at the end of the session.
