Museums Victoria and MIFF have been partnering together since 2010 to present Fulldome Showcase as part of the Melbourne International Film Festival. The Fulldome Showcases present the best fulldome cinema from around the world. The Fulldome Showcases give MIFF the opportunity to screen this unique form of cinema to the festival audience. This is also an opportunity for the MP to broaden their adult audience.

Showcase One

METARACT

Manami Sakamoto & Yuri Urano | Japan 2024 | 20 minutes

Metaract is an exploration of the duality between analog and digital. The artists' quest for meaning is revealed through the use of natural environments, employed as textures, colors and sounds in their creation, juxtaposed with digital elements.

The film features superimpositions of artificial sounds and fragments created using 3DCG (three-dimensional imaging) technology, intensifying the narrative composition. This artistic elaboration could not be achieved through the use of machines alone but requires the combination of real and virtual world phenomena.

With Metaract, Sakamoto and Urano hope to stimulate the public's imagination and raise awareness of the joys of living in this "coexisting world".

Metaract is a project developed as part of SAT's research-creation residencies.

Iwakura

Kazuya Nagaya & Ali Mahmut Demirel & Maurice Jones | Japan/Canada 2022 | 20 minutes

Rooted in Shinto mythology, Iwakura refers to the spirits that embody the sacred rock formations found throughout Japan. Iwakura reveals the creative strategies employed by visual artist Ali M. Demirel to critically integrate AI into his process. From super-resolution to image stitching and artificial slow motion, the prints presented illustrate the challenges, opportunities and funny accidents that AI brings to artistic activity.

By immersing the public in Demirel's organic visual material, collected in the Kumano region, cradle of Japanese spirituality, and Nagaya's meditative, ambient soundscapes, inspired by Zen-Buddhist prayer rituals, Iwakura offers a profound journey that makes us rediscover the sublime character of nature.

Iwakura was made possible by the 9th cycle of the Goethe-Institut's International Co-production Fund.

INNERSTAR 01 : Reddening

HUANG Wei and CHENG Dao-Yuan | Taiwan 2023 | 15 minutes

INNERSTAR is an audio-visual series co-presented by HUANG Wei and CHENG Dao-Yuan. The concept is based on the relationship between the universe and mind, inspired by astronomical phenomena and the exploration of consciousness and existence from a philosophical perspective.

INNERSTAR 01: Reddening is the first work in this series. Reddening refers to the interaction between interstellar matter and light, resulting in scattering and wavelength shifts. Using relevant data and physical characteristics as the reference basis for visual and sound, an audio-visual immersive experience is presented with surround sound and dome projection. Soaked and enfolded with a dazzling, illusive atmosphere, viewers are able to be in the deepest space in their minds. The stars are in your heart, and you are the universe.

Showcase Two

Limbotopia

Hsieh Wen-Yee | Taiwan 2024 | 25 minutes

LIMBOTOPIA presents an immersive world where time stands still, amidst a blend of utopia and dystopia. Following an environmental crisis, participants journey through monochromatic eternity in Taiwan. Premiering at Tribeca, Hsieh Wen-Yee's work redefines gravity and perspective, blending hypnotic imagery with electronic soundscapes, creating a spellbinding experience.

Impossible Space

Rocco Helmchen & Johannes Kraas | Germany 2024 | 45 minutes

Impossible Space is an immersive odyssey into space. A symphonic journey through fascinating real and artificial visual worlds, inspired by the spirit of science and discovery. Yet, in this production, the cosmos isn't merely the outer universe; it can also unfold in our everyday lives, within our bodies, in a computer algorithm or in the unimaginably small building blocks of reality itself. This sci-art-music show picks up all these themes, reinterprets them in new and unexpected ways, and creates a unique audiovisual experience.

The original music melds and contrasts epic orchestral film scores with minimalist electronic sounds and beats or expansive soundscapes with tender melodic themes. It serves to guide and emotionally engage, transforming each visual into a vivid, tangible world that might truly exist within the infinite stretches of space - or perhaps, they already do.

The imagery ranges from fractal-mathematical nebulae, imagined planets or strange AI-generated dimensions to nature on earth, abstracted realities and human forms : A vortex of color, light, and sound warps space and time, inviting the audience on a fascinating ride through our profoundly impossible universe.

Once again, the two artists (composer Johannes Kraas and visual artist Rocco Helmchen) use the unique 360 dome space for their latest collaboration.

Please note: Impossible Space will celebrate its international public premiere at the festival.
