Aboriginal String Bags, Nets and Cordage

By Alan L. West

Alan West, former senior curator in Anthropology and Research Associate in Museums Victoria's Indigenous Cultures Department, has devoted years of effort to the study of bags, nets and cordage made by Indigenous Australians. He carried out fieldwork among Aboriginal communities on both west and east coasts of Cape York Peninsula where he added considerable depth to his knowledge of the manufacture of cordage and the creation of other artefacts from it.

The book contains many photographs of the manufacturing process as well as detailed diagrams of weaving techniques, meticulously derived through a study of artefacts held in the collections of Museums Victoria.
