The state of Australia’s ecological future: Dr Jane Goodall to weigh in at Museum Victoria’s Future Forums event
Museums Victoria will host world-renowned ethologist and conservationist Dr Jane Goodall in an exclusive discussion about the decline in the world’s biodiversity, and her approach for tackling this growing issue.
The fifth instalment of Museums Victoria’s Future Forums discussion series, Jane Goodall In Conversation will feature a keynote presentation by Dr Goodall that will shed light on the projects of the Jane Goodall Institute, including how it is working towards combatting biodiversity loss by enabling communities and First Peoples to preserve endangered species at a local level.
To round out the evening, internationally acclaimed scientist, writer and conservationist, Professor Tim Flannery will lead a Q&A with Goodall and Associate Professor Jane Melville, Senior Curator of Terrestrial Vertebrates from Museums Victoria Research Institute, of which environmental protection and sustainability is a key focus.
The panel will examine ways we can act locally to protect the natural world from the impacts of a growing human population and climate change to have a global impact.
Appearing live via video link from her home in the UK, Dr Goodall will also weigh in on the State of the Environment report, recently released by Australia’s federal government.
Dr Goodall stated that the report is a grave acknowledgment that our impact on the environment is contributing to a significant decline in the condition of Australia’s unique ecosystem, including the risk of extinction for many native species.
“There is no doubt that Australia has a hill to climb in addressing the negative impacts of economic development but with the information contained in the report, we have the knowledge and ability to address these impacts if we start now,” she said.
Museums Victoria CEO & Director, Lynley Crosswell, said Museums Victoria is honoured to host a conversation that will examine one of the most critical issues currently faced and discuss ways to create positive change that will have a lasting impact on the environment.
“We are proud to host preeminent thought-leaders such as Dr Goodall at our Future Forums conversation series and feel privileged that we can facilitate thought-provoking and important discussions that will help shape our global future.”
