Yoonjung Kim’s work primarily features ribbon-themed compositions along with imagery inspired by her memories of Korea, Australian plants and animals, and everyday objects. These works are created using traditional painting techniques, with delicate and intricate details influenced by Korean embroidery and decorative art.
Ribbons are a central motif in her work; beyond their decorative nature, ribbons symbolize memory, emotion, and connection. She finds joy in exploring how ordinary objects or landscapes can be reinterpreted in new contexts, offering fresh perspectives on familiar things.
Growing up in Korea, she was naturally influenced by the aesthetic sensibilities and design elements she encountered in daily life. In particular, the Korean stationery and packaging she loved as a child—featuring vibrant yet soft colours and intricate, charming illustrations— which continue to inspire her work today.
Now residing in Melbourne, she has expanded her artistic practice with the experience of moving between Korea and Australia naturally influencing her work and forming a cross-cultural artistic language. Her process is not merely a stylistic experiment; she explores themes of identity, cultural adaptation, and exchange as a meaningful way to visually express her identity and experiences.
