This event brings together Melinda Ham, author of The Lucky Ones: Stories of Australian Refugee Journeys, Barat Ali Batoor, an acclaimed photojournalist and refugee advocate, and Kasse Nguyen, a Vietnamese refugee, engineer, and nurse.

Bios
Melinda Ham
Canadian-born Melinda Ham is the author of The Lucky Ones Stories of Australian Refugee Journeys published by Affirm Press in 2024. Melinda has been a journalist and writer for more than 30 years. Her career started in southern Africa where she was a correspondent for the Associated Press and London’s Daily Telegraph, The Economist and other international publications. She has also reported from India and Singapore for the Australian Financial Review.
Kasse Nguyen
Kasse Nguyen is a Vietnamese refugee who is profiled in the book, The Lucky Ones: Stories of Australian Refugee Journeys. Kasse's journey is a testament to resilience and hope. Fleeing Vietnam as a child, Kasse endured numerous hardships before finding safety and a new beginning in Australia. She had a successful career as an IT engineer and is now retraining as a nurse. Her story, along with others in the book, highlights the courage and determination of refugees who have overcome immense challenges to rebuild their lives in a new country.
Barat Ali Batoor
Barat Ali Batoor is a multi-award-winning photographer and filmmaker. Batoor started photography in 2002 and launched his first solo exhibition in 2007. His photographs were exhibited across the world including the U.S., Europe, Asia and Australia.
His works have been published in The Washington Post, Newsweek, Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, Stern, India Today, Risk Magazine, The Global Mail, The Daily Mail, The West Australian, Strategic Review and others.
