Abstract

The Thaumatelsonidae were separated from Stenothoidae by Walker (1906) and reduced to a subfamily of Stenothoidae by Barnard (1972). The history of the subfamily is reviewed and its included genera placed in two divisions. All genera and species of the less specialised division are revised here. Four new genera are erected, RaukumaraPtychotelsonPycnopyge and YarraRaumahara waroona and Yarra unguiserra are described as new species, Raumahara rongoBarnard placed in the newly erected genus Raukumara. All belong to this thaumatelsonine group but it is shown that similar structures in Pycnopyge are homoplasies which developed independently. This genus is removed from Thaumatelsoninae.
