I am the museum's first research scientist trained in the science of fish classification and evolution, and am considered the Victorian authority on the identification of Victorian fishes, as well as a world authority on the taxonomy of a number of major fish groups.

Since my arrival in 1979, my research has focused on southern Australian species ranging from sharks and rays to a wide range of higher bony fishes and I have collaborated with fellow scientists to produce what are now the most authoritative field guides to the fishes of a number of geographical areas, including Australia’s southern coast and New Zealand waters.

My current work is aimed at revealing the surprising complexity of deep-water families, previously thought to be far less diverse, employing both anatomical and genetic techniques.

During my tenure the museum's fish collection has grown from a valuable Victorian representation of moderate size with historically important components from elsewhere in the world to Australia's third largest, now including genetic as well as preserved specimens ranging from eggs to full sized adults collected throughout Australasia. Our rapidly growing Fishes of Australia website is quickly becoming your one-stop-shop for information about the more than 5000 Australian fish species.
