Conservation

Growing continuously together, Melbourne and the World Heritage listed Royal Exhibition Building have been bringing people and ideas together for nearly 140 years.

The Royal Exhibition Building

The jewel of our city's skyline, the Royal Exhibition Building opened in 1880 to house exhibitions, transform industry and encourage new ways of thinking.  Still proudly taking on this role, the building is now looking to the sky with the Australian Government awarding Museums Victoria a $20 million capital works project.

Working to protect our legacy for future generations, award-winning historical architects Lovell Chen and heritage builders HBS Group, will deliver southern façade conservation works and the restoration of the 1880’s Dome Promenade, offering unparalleled 360-degree views.  This restored attraction will also include a lift, in the same location as the one installed for the 1888 Melbourne Centennial International Exhibition.

When complete Museums Victoria will deliver improved daily access, including a multi-layered experience showcasing the building’s many unique stories.  Excitingly, for the first time we’ll also be spotlighting the exquisite art collection of 19th-century businessman John Twycross.

Protecting and promoting Melbourne's heart, Museums Victoria looks forward to sharing the next chapter of the Royal Exhibition Building with you.
