William Blandowski’s fish
William Blandowski was the first zoologist hired by the museum. The naming of several fish species after prominent figures of the Philosophical Institute, and the uncomplimentary descriptions Blandowski provided, created a scandal in Melbourne that forced his departure.
Blandowski named the fish
in ‘honour’ of Philosophical Institute member Dr Eades. It was described as ‘a fish easily recognized by its low forehead, big belly and sharp spine’.
