Title Image: Leaving Australia
After the Race

 Phar Lap at Agua Caliente

After the race, as the champion was brought back to the winners' circle, the crowd of 50,000 witnessed the Australians' sense of relief and elation.

Jockey Billy Elliot leapt out of the saddle and grabbed at the racecourse announcer's microphone: 'Hello Australia! Hello Mother! Your last letter spurred me on. This is a great victory!'

That night at the Agua Caliente casino the Australian camp really cut loose. The drinks were on David Davis. The entertainment was no less than the singer Al Jolson, America's leading performer of the era.

Phar Lap himself had a much quieter night. Who would have predicted then that he had so few of them left?
