Mick Harvey curates Nocturnal April: A Night at the Museum

Co-founder of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and The Birthday Party summons Serge Gainsbourg and very special guests.

Mick Harvey

Nocturnal returns in April as legendary artist and composer Mick Harvey assembles a stellar line-up of friends, collaborators and films.

Mick Harvey & The Intoxicated Men. Drawing from his four albums of translated works, Mick Harvey brings to life the songs of Serge Gainsbourg for one night at Melbourne Museum. Harvey - a composer, co-founder of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The Birthday Party and The Boys Next Door and longtime collaborator of P.J. Harvey - will be joined by J.P. Shilo (Hungry Ghosts), Dan Luscombe (The Drones, Dan Kelly), Glenn Lewis, Hugo Cran (Devastations), Xanthe Waite and a string section. A perfect requiem.

Harry Howard & The NDE are a super group of sorts. Hailing from These Immortal Souls, Crime & the City Solution, Coral Snakes, The Moodists, the mistLY and Moll Flanders Band, Harry Howard & the NDE have released three acclaimed LPs and shared the stage with the likes of Kid Congo & the Pink Monkey Birds, The Pop Group, The Aints, Lydia Lunch Retrovirus and Thurston Moore. "Hard-edged and grooving", in Harvey's words.

Gemini 4 is the latest project from Hugo Race (Dirtmusic, ex-Bad Seeds) and Michelangelo Russo (The True Spirit), together with keyboardist Julitha Ryan (Silver Ray) and percussionist/producer Andre 'Idge' Hehir. It began as an experiment - freestyling in the low-tech glamour of Melbourne’s Soundpark Studio. No rules, no speaking, no plan. Gemini telepathy wrought wild. Total delirium. "Cool modern sounds from cool, modern people."

Primo! are Xanthe Waite, Violetta DelConte Race, Suzanne Walker and Amy Hill. Primo! make use of two guitars, bass, drums, sound effects and a group vocal sensibility to ornament their punk and indie deconstructions. Released through UK label Upset the Rhythm last year, their bouyant debut LP Amici is essential listening. "Primo! will bring a serve of glamour and charm to the evening", says Harvey. Prego.

Tiamo 3 are "a toupe-wearing ensemble featuring Dan Luscombe (The Drones) and Dan Kelly - allegedly playing a repertoire of European classics. Perhaps they ARE Eurotrash. Time will tell."

Need a moment? Head underground for a selection of films handpicked by Harvey, including Uli M. Schüppel's Der Platz - soundtracked by F.M. Einheit (Einstürzende Neubauten) - and Lost in Music, which pairs footage the final hours of Risiko - the infamous West Berlin nightspot once tended by Blixa Bargeld and frequented by the likes of Harvey, Nick Cave, The Cramps, Gun Club, Wim Wenders and Alan Vega - with Anita Lane’s version of the Sister Sledge classic.

As always, night-owls are invited to grab a cocktail and enjoy one-on-one access to our resident experts, collection curiosities and exhibitions like Gut Feelings - a stunning new exploration of the far-reaching impact of gut microbes in the body, separating scientific facts from the hashtag fads. Dodge the shadows and leave no corner unexplored. It's all yours.
