Melbourne Museum Unwraps Summer Programming for Make Believe: The Story of the Myer Christmas Windows

Magical new exhibition now open.

Make Believe: The Story of the Myer Christmas Windows

As we officially slide into the silly season, take a peek behind the glass with Make Believe: The Story of the Myer Christmas Windows. This new exhibition now open at Melbourne Musem celebrates a definitively Melbourne tradition, brought to life with a series of festive fun programming set to sprinkle a little glitter and magic throughout the holiday season.

Make Believe is a glittering, experience for children and adults alike, a feast of magical models, working drawings, beloved books and playful puppets with more than 250 quirky and kitsch characters from windows past revealing the astonishing skill and artistry of the makers and creators.

The exhibition includes a replica of the very first Myer Christmas Windows in 1956; a time when Melbourne was giddy with Olympics fever, hosting the first-ever televised Games. Freddie Asmussen, then head of Visual Merchandising at Myer, saw his chance to do something bold, creating a series of novelty Christmas windows across the store's entire Bourke Street facade. And thus a Melbourne tradition was born!

In the spirit of magic and making, Melbourne Museum has put together a program of festive fun activities for families to join in this summer. From decorating Christmas cards to making your own window magic, hearing storybooks come to life or even creating treasured puppets from silly season trash, there are plenty of ways to unwrap your creativity over the holidays.

Make Believe: The Story of the Myer Christmas Windows celebrates a beloved tradition presented in glittering splendour by one of Melbourne's most cherished cultural destinations and offers a truly unmissable experience this festive season.
