Blak Night / White Night brings interactive splendor to Melbourne Museum this week

Adventure into Melbourne Museum for Blak Night/White Night: an immersive suite of programs and performances celebrating First Nations cultures and histories on the Thursday and Saturday evenings of this year’s White Night Reimagined.

Constantina Bush

Setting the stage for Blak Night/White Night, acclaimed art-technology duo PluginHUMAN will collaborate with First Peoples curator Isobel Morphy-Walsh to illuminate the Museum’s interiors with patterns and textures sourced from select collection items.

This spectacular performance space will be lined with specially-crafted LED sculptures that harness real-time data to transform themselves based on the movements of trees that line Carlton Gardens.

Highlighting the ongoing redevelopment of Te Vainui O Pasifika Gallery, Sounds of Polynesia will share ensemble performances of the music and dance of the Cook Islands of Rarotonga, Aitutaki, Mangaia, and Manihiki, showcasing each island’s distinct styles and traditions.

Culture Evolves will explore stories of genocide and the experiences of First Nations peoples today through their ever-changing showcase of traditional dance and hip hop. This multidisciplinary group brings Aboriginal and West Papau artists together, sharing dance as a reminder of the importance of keeping culture alive.

Throughout the evening, catch forgotten queen Constantina Bush: the fabulous and outrageous alter-ego of actor and artist Kamahi Djordon King, supported by performers from Ibijerri Theatre Company.

Visitors can witness spectacular projections on the magnificent Royal Exhibition Building. Plus, visitors can venture out into Carlton Gardens to discover the delights of the Spiritual Ream, set to leave visitors of all ages filled with awe.

This is more than just a bit of fun. This is an adventure. More information and event timings available here.
