Autumn School Holidays at Museums Victoria
Play the part of an engineer, create unique artworks using harvested veggies and learn all about the fascinating way our bodies turn food into energy.
It's the season of frolicking through freshly fallen leaves and pulling out those long-forgotten rumpled coats that we've pushed to the back of our wardrobes.
Autumn is nearly at our doorsteps, bringing with it another exciting school holiday program at Museums Victoria. An abundance of activities and workshops for children of all ages will take place across Melbourne Museum, Scienceworks and Immigration Museum this April.
Have you ever wondered who handles all those insects, spiders, snails and other fascinating invertebrates on display? Melbourne Museum invites kids to Meet the Museum Expert and get a sneak peek into what our live exhibit team do behind closed doors. As part of this year's Comedy Festival, The (Very) Big Laugh Out will bring the Melbourne Museum Plaza to life, with an array of world-class local and international street performers. Kids aged 6+ can find out about how our bodies turn food into energy in Gut Feeling by going on an immersive, interactive journey through the human digestive system, from teeth to bum! Thinking of ways to teach your little ones about how to save water? Kids of all ages can learn all about water saving tips with Shower Superstars, presented in partnership with City West Water, South East Water and Yarra Valley Water. They can sing and dance karaoke-style and decorate a bathroom tile to adorn the museum's foyer and to take home. Budding directors ages 8-13 will get a chance to create their own road safety commercials using state-of-the-art technology at TAC’s new Road to Zero Education Complex at the museum. And for grandparents looking to do something a little different these school holidays, our Intergenerational Animation Workshop will delve into the world of animation and storytelling for kids ages 5-12 years. See the full Melbourne Museum school holiday program here.
Scienceworks is setting up an open ended Engineering Play Space, with activities for kids of all ages. Ever wanted to know what a giant engine sounds like or the science behind it? Well now you can, by chatting to a real life engineer in Engineer Encounters. In Tiny Builders, kids ages 2-5 can immerse themselves in a mini construction site where they can tinker away to their hearts content. And in Pneumatic Movers, kids ages 6+ will get to use their creative and problem-solving skills to make machines using air and pistons. Other fun activities include learning about the universe via our new planetarium system, or seeing the electrifying lightning show Bolt from the Blue. The Autumn holiday program at Scienceworks is generously supported by Exxon-Mobil. More information on all activities at Scienceworks here.
Get your hands dirty at Immigration Museum's courtyard garden oasis. In Wild Cards, take inspiration from the well-known stationary label Able and Game, to illustrate fun and quirky greetings cards for all occasions. And in Autumn Harvest, a bounty of vegetables awaits, ready to be transformed into original artworks, including mini scarecrows and urban critters to decorate the museum's planter boxes or to take home to your own garden. More information on all activities at Immigration Museum here.
The summer sun might be fading, but there is never a dull moment at Museums Victoria as it continues to deliver unmissable experiences to kids of all ages and from all walks of life.
