Join Immigration Museum’s special education program to uncover migration stories and celebrate identities as part of the Pillars of Light Festival. This program includes a staff-led program and exhibition visit, as well as a unique activity at Federation Square.

Students are invited to uncover personal settlement stories and migration stories contained in a collection of suitcases in staff-led program. Students work in teams to unpack primary sources and develop a profile of the person whose belongings they discover. A range of personal stories are shared to showcase varying migration patterns in Victoria’s history. All students are asked to reflect on their own stories, make connections to the current Victorian context, and identify ways to be active and informed global citizens.

Following the staff-led session, students explore the museum galleries in the ‘Identity: yours, mine, ours’ exhibition. They will reflect on what it means to belong and not belong in Australia in a self-guided tour. The ‘Identity: yours, mine, ours’ exhibition asks students to explore culturally diverse communities in Victoria, and interrogate prejudice, stereotyping, and difference. Students will consider what actions they can take to support each member of their community.

This program also includes a special visit to Federation Square where students will participate in a shared creative activity to celebrate their identities. Their artistic work will be captured on the digital screen at Federation Square during the Pillars of Light festival, offering a vision for a hopeful future.

Pillars of Light is supported by Gandel Foundation and the Ark Centre
