Yaqona being prepared in a tanoa

The first stage of preparation is to pound yaqona roots to a fine powder which is then mixed with water. Here the powder is being strained to remove the fibres. The man preparing the yaqona is of chiefly rank, entitling him to wear a civa, his chest ornament.
