Vary from 10-80mm in length. Large hard plate covers the head. Most have 2 pairs of wings but some are wingless. Generally nocturnal animals found in a range of habitats from rainforests to deserts. Mostly vegetarian, though some pest species eat almost anything. Predators include other insects, frogs, reptiles, birds and mammals.
