Vary widely from 2-300mm in length. Long, slender with a hard outer casing and multiple body segments. Each segment is rounded and has two pairs of legs attached. Legs can number up to 700. Rounded head has two short antennae. Glands along the side of the body can emit a foul-smelling chemical. Found in moist habitats. Eat decaying vegetation and other plant matter. Predators include beetles, ants and other insects, and some vertebrate animals.
