Less than 6mm in length with laterally compressed bodies, as if flattened while lying on their sides. Covered in tiny hairs and spines that point backwards. Wingless, but with enlarged hind legs for jumping. Found mostly on mammals, but some species will also attack birds. Feed on the blood of their host using their piercing/sucking mouthparts. May be eaten by the host or groomed from the body.
